The Hidden Driver: How Our Subconscious Beliefs Shape Health, Behaviour, and Healing

So much of what we think, feel, and do each day is not as conscious as we might believe. Beneath our awareness lies a powerful system, our subconscious mind, influencing our decisions, reactions, and ultimately, our experience of living.
It’s often said that the subconscious drives the majority of our thoughts and behaviours. Whether that figure is 70%, 90%, or somewhere in between, the principle remains the same: a significant portion of our lives is shaped not by deliberate choice, but by deeply embedded patterns.
The Library of Beliefs
From early childhood, we begin building a “library” of beliefs. These beliefs are formed through our experiences such as what we’re told, what we observe, and how we interpret events and experiences. Over time, they become internalised as absolute truths:
“I’m not capable.”
“I need to stay safe.”
“If I push myself, something will go wrong.”
“This is just how my body is.”
“Nothing works for me”
“I will never get better”
“I’m not that sort of person”
These beliefs are not consciously chosen. In fact, many of them were formed as protective mechanisms, ways to help us navigate situations we didn’t yet have the capacity to understand. At one point, they served a purpose. But they tend to fall out of date very quickly, yet they still hang around to hold us back.
The biggest challenge is that the subconscious doesn’t update itself automatically.
When your beliefs can become limiting to your life & health
What was once protective can, over time, become limiting. This is particularly relevant when we look at chronic illness and persistent pain. Many people find themselves feeling “stuck” where they are wanting to move forward, to heal, to take action, but somehow unable to do so. From a subconscious perspective, this can make sense.
If the mind has linked certain actions, environments, or changes with danger (even if that danger is no longer real), it will continue to hold you back. Not out of failure, but out of protection.
In this way, illness or pain can sometimes become part of a broader subconscious pattern:
A way of avoiding something the system perceives as unsafe
A signal to slow down or withdraw
A deeply ingrained identity reinforced over time
Once we understand that these patterns exist, we can begin to work with them rather than against them.
Willpower & Positive thinking
Many people try to overcome these patterns through logic or determination alone. Although this is admirable and committed, it often doesn’t shift the issue sustainably. If the subconscious holds a conflicting belief such as “this isn’t safe”, then no amount of conscious effort will feel easy or sustainable.
This is why change can feel so frustrating. You’re likely not lacking motivation at all, you’re just working against a deeper programme.
To create lasting change, we need to access the level where those programs live and go to the source.
Working With the Subconscious
This is where techniques such as Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT), often known as tapping technique, and Psych-K come into play.
Rather than trying to override the subconscious, these approaches aim to communicate directly with it.
They work by:
Bringing unconscious beliefs into awareness
Reducing the emotional charge associated with past experiences
Rewriting patterns that are no longer relevant or supportive
Through these methods, it becomes possible to identify beliefs that may once have been protective but are now outdated and we work by gradually throwing these out and replacing with more relevant & helpful beliefs.
For example:
An identity built around illness may be unconsciously reinforced, even when change is desired. A very common belief is “I don’t deserve to be well” so by removing this you can imagine how it opens up some big shifts in what your life may become.
By gently and consistently working at this level, these patterns can begin to shift and it is so encouraging when you can begin to see the signs of deep change becoming part of your life.
Letting Go of What No Longer Serves
True healing is not about taking supplements, or going on a strict diet, it’s often about releasing what no longer belongs. Sustainable healing has to incorporate your subconscious as it is the driving force behind your actions, thoughts and behaviours. Outdated beliefs, protective patterns, and subconscious associations can remain long after their purpose has passed. When they are brought into awareness and addressed, they can be updated or let go entirely. We gain real traction with our healing when you start to gain alignment between your conscious desires and your subconscious programming.
If you'd like to explore how subconscious beliefs quietly influence our daily behaviours, emotional responses, and even our physical health then sign up to this month's webinar where we will explore all of this in more detail. We hope to bring personal insights when we ask you to reflect on certain questions and areas of 'living'.
