Cell Danger Response: when the body can't heal
Do you feel you have tried EVERYTHING? And nothing works?
Let's explain why this happens and how we work with this situation to finally get you on the right road to health again. We describe the concept here as it is so valuable to understand this is a crucial aspect of your recovery.

Your Path to Healing: The Cell Danger Response, Mitochondria, and the Microbiome
Have you ever felt like you’ve tried everything - every diet, supplement, or therapy - yet nothing seems to work? Maybe you’re told you’re just “too sensitive” or that your symptoms are all in your head. But deep down, you know something isn’t right, even if you look fine on the outside. You’re not alone, and you’re certainly not imagining things.

In our practice, we see this pattern often: people stuck in a cycle of fatigue, pain, unexplained symptoms, and hypersensitivity to foods, chemicals, or stress. This is because your body’s built-in protective system, known as the Cell Danger Response (CDR), can sometimes get stuck in the “on” position. Imagine your body as a fortress—when it senses a threat, it locks down to protect itself. This is helpful during a storm, and plays an important role, but if the doors stay bolted long after the danger has passed, life inside the fortress suffers.

When your cells detect threats such as infections, toxins, chronic stress, or even emotional trauma they shift into survival mode. Mitochondria, the tiny power plants inside your cells, slow down energy production and send out distress signals. Cell membranes become rigid, making it hard for nutrients to get in and waste to get out. The immune system stays on high alert, and normal “housekeeping” like tissue repair and digestion takes a back seat. If this state persists, it can lead to ongoing health problems and make recovery feel impossible.

Why do some people get stuck here? Often, it’s because the original stressors - whether physical, chemical, or emotional - haven’t been fully resolved. The body remains hyper-vigilant, unable to switch back to healing mode. That’s why our approach focuses initially on encouraging a sense of safety into the nervous system which will then 'allow' the stages of healing to normalise and you begin to make progress.
As well as taking lifestyle actions to enable that sense of calm and safety, there are two key areas of interest for unblocking your cell danger response: your mitochondria and your gut microbiome.

Mitochondria aren’t just energy producers; they’re also sensors that help decide when your body should defend or repair. When they’re stuck in defence mode, your health suffers. Meanwhile, your gut microbiome - the vast ecosystem of bacteria in your digestive tract - plays a central role in keeping mitochondria healthy. These two systems are in constant conversation, and when one is out of balance, the other struggles too. It’s a feedback loop that can keep you feeling unwell, but it’s also a loop that can be gently unwound.

Remarkably, mitochondria and gut microbes are distant relatives, sharing a biochemical “language” that dates back billions of years. When your gut is healthy, it sends supportive signals to your mitochondria, boosting energy and healing. When it’s out of balance, it can trap your cells in a state of chronic stress.

Our signature programme, the Bioenergetics Mastery Programme, is designed to help you break this cycle. By identifying and removing hidden stressors, nurturing your mitochondria, and restoring balance to your gut microbiome, we help your body shift out of survival mode and into true healing. This is the foundation for lasting recovery—restoring energy, resilience, and vitality from the inside out.
